Chapter 6

She couldn’t help but feel relieved. All her worries had been for nothing after all. The differences between the Jon Silva she’d conjured up in her head and the real man were far too great. A part of her was relieved to be seeing another unknown side to him. A vulnerable side. She was glad that she agreed to drink with him.

She didn’t know what exactly the problem was or who was looking for his mom, but she figured that if she was in any immediate danger then Jon wouldn’t have drank. He would’ve stayed next to his phone making sure that she was okay because he cared deeply for his mom. Jon was more normal than she expected him to be. He cared for the people that worked for him, and he wasn’t unnecessarily mean or rude to anyone. Just like every other normal, well-raised person.

His body, big as it was, didn’t make him any less human. He still got hurt and stumbled, like everyone else.

The man was a lightweight. Harper would never believe her if she told her that Jon Silva fell asleep after three cans of beer. She was having a hard time believing it herself.

She shook him again, but he didn’t budge.

“Come on. Wake up. You can’t fall asleep here. It’s bad for your health, and there’s no way I’ll be able to carry you to your bedroom.”

She poked his shoulder hard, but he didn’t wake up. His lashes fluttered softly.

Her eyes trailed over the scars on his face and his sharp jaw. He was a really handsome man.

She reached out her hand to touch the crook in his nose. His skin was smooth to the touch. She ran her eyes over his face again, and she let out a strangled gasp when she saw that his eyes were open. He’d been watching her.

“I didn’t do anything weird,” she blurted out, as she stumbled backwards. She landed on the floor with a thud.

He raised his head slowly to look at her, and to her surprise, he smiled. It was a loopy, goofy grin that reminded her of her baby cousins.

“Jon,” she said.

“Yes Eve?” His voice was even more surprising than the grin. It was so low that she barely caught his words. She wasn’t sitting close to him, but she heard his chest rumble as he spoke.

“Are you drunk right now?” she inquired.

“No, I’m not drunk.” As though contradicting his own sentence on purpose, his lips spread into a grin wider than the one he’d been sporting before.

“I’m totally not drunk,” he repeated.

Holy shit, Jon Silva was drunk.

She almost didn’t want to believe it, but the evidence was right in front of her eyes.

“Oh my God,” she whispered. She didn’t know if she wanted to take pictures and videos or hide the fact that she allowed her patient get drunk. But then again, she didn’t know that he was such a lightweight—look at the man’s size!

She spotted him reaching for another can and pulled it far away from his reach.
